Louisiana Benefits Planning Services

The Louisiana Benefits Planning Services, LABPS is one of two SSA funded Work Incentive Planning and Assistance grants awarded to organizations in Louisiana. Ours is one of the many projects operated by LSUHSC Human Development Center. LABPS employs Benefits Planners who receive extensive initial and on-going training about SSA and other work incentives as well as eligibility requirements for other Federal and State programs.Benefits Planners offer quality planning and assistance services in their assigned service areas within Louisiana.

LABPS Goals

The goal of the Louisiana Benefits Planning Services project is to better enable SSA beneficiaries with disabilities to make informed choices about work. Each WIPA Project has Benefits Planners who:

  • Provide work incentives planning and assistance
  • Conduct outreach efforts in collaboration with SSA's Beneficiary Access and Support Services (BASS)
  • Work in cooperation with Federal, State, and private agencies and nonprofit organizations that serve beneficiaries with disabilities
  • Screen and refer beneficiaries with disabilities to appropriate Employment Networks
  • Provide information on the availability of protection and advocacy services

Louisiana Launches ABLE Program

The ABLE National Resource Center, managed by National Disability Institute (NDI), is excited to congratulate the State of Louisiana on becoming the 23rd state to launch an ABLE program. The Louisiana ABLE program, named LA ABLE, will be managed by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LAOFSA) and the Louisiana Tuition Trust Authority (LATTA). Louisiana ABLE Accounts will only be available to eligible Louisiana residents with disabilities.

LA ABLE allows qualified individuals with disabilities to save up to $14,000 a year in an ABLE account without jeopardizing their eligibility for federally-funded means tested benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. The funds in the account can be used for disability-related expenses that assist the beneficiary in increasing and/or maintaining his or her health, independence or quality of life.
