Community Development Program
Jane M. Everson, Ph.D., Program Director


Goal:

To develop, evaluate, and disseminate models that promote a community’s recognition and development of the behaviors essential to the community’s achievement of efficient human development goals.


Intended Impact:       

Promote the concept of citizenship for all persons residing in a community by developing services and supports that improve full inclusion 

Institute a systematic community development process that addresses a community’s behaviors and values 

Promote community development as a mechanism to create change within defined communities and outward to larger communities


Topics/Areas of Expertise: 

Development/implementation of protocols for community needs assessments, development, and evaluation 

Training/technical assistance on community culture, values, and behaviors 

Training/technical assistance on asset accumulation, housing, postsecondary education, entrepreneurial employment, and youth and self-advocate self-determination 

 
Overview of Selected Activities/Accomplishments:
 

  • Provide training workshops on community culture, values, behaviors, and community development

  • Provide training workshops on asset accumulation

  • Provide training workshops on community-level and interagency teaming

  • Conduct research on youth self-determination, leadership, and self-esteem

  • Conduct research and provide training workshops on affordable housing, and postsecondary education

 
Directions for Future Program Development:
 

  • Develop/disseminate training materials (“Fact Sheets”) on community development, asset accumulation, and teaming

  • Conduct research on essential practices associated with community development

  • Demonstrate effective models of asset accumulation, affordable housing, postsecondary education, and youth transition
