RAMP Project Featured in Local School Publication
(This article was taken from Health Sciences Annual. A publication of Walter L. Cohen High School)
RAMP is a career prep-mentoring program that exposes youth to post-secondary education and careers. RAMP provides students an opportunity to visit college campuses and job shadow at various job sites around the city. Throughout the duration of the program students also have a mentor who will help them develop an individual mentoring plan to assist them in achieving their own goals. Participants of the program wanted to express what RAMP means to them and how it has affected their lives. Written by Shawn Berry. Rachell Hart. Fredrell Jenkins. Quinn Jones. Montrell McGraw. Tray-Cee Skipper.
Our experiences with RAMP have been very good because the mentors taught us how to make better choices in life. They taught us that we should never talk bad about anyone because you never know what they are going through. We appreciate all the advice that Ms. Sonya showed us like, being disrespectful is not what it's all about. We had fun learning new things like how to complete a job application, how to conduct ourselves on a job interview and how to speak appropriately to others. We enjoyed going on the field trip to Delgado Community College and learning about college life. It was also interesting learning about celebrities and athletics with learning disabilities. It taught us that anyone can be affected by a learning disability but they can still accomplish their goals. We also enjoyed RAMP because they fed us so we wouldn't be hungry. Every time we came to RAMP we always learned something new like talking about our weekly goals, researching about jobs and doing something fun. All the mentors were really nice and they helped us with any problem that we were having. We had a good time with RAMP and we want to thank all of the mentors and Ms. Sonya because they gave us that extra push to become a better person. We are also thankful for Ms. Sonya who put in hard work to help us.
