The Center for Housing and New Community Economics (CHANCE) CHANCE was established in March of 2001. Its mission is to improve and increase access to integrated, affordable, and accessible housing coordinated with, but separte from, personal assistance and supportive services. CHANCE’s purpose will be to offer alternatives to approaches that segregate, congregate, and control people with disabilities. IOD will work in partnership with ADAPT in all aspects of the Center. Concrete Change The goal of Concrete Change is to make all homes visitable. Concrete Change’s website also showcased pictures of the first accessible gingerbread house, built by the Disability Rights Center, Rochester, NY, as their entry into the 1998 Rochester annual gingerbread art display. The organization produces a video “Building Better Neighborhoods.” Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) Housing Task Force CCD is a coalition of 100 national consumer, advocacy, provider and professional organizations headquartered in Washington, D.C. The CCD Housing Task Force works with Congress and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to increase access to decent, safe and affordable housing for all people with disabilities and to protect their rights guaranteed under the Fair Housing Act. Corporation for Supportive Housing The mission of the Corporation of Supportive Housing (CSH) is to expand the quantity and quality of service-supported permanent housing for individuals with special needs who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. CSH provides predevelopment loans in the context of a broad array of technical assistance and other support to nonprofit supportive housing providers. Fannie Mae Fannie Mae funds several programs to assist homeowners in purchasing and modifying their homes. FannieMae Foundation The Fannie Mae Foundation, a private foundation, supports national and local nonprofit organizations working to provide decent and affordable housing, and otherwise improve the quality of life in communities throughout the United States. To promote homeownership, the Foundation sponsors public service outreach efforts, including consumer education, home-buying fairs, and conducts housing and policy research. HUD’s People with Disabilities Site HUD has launched a new website to better explain the rights of people with disabilities who are seeking housing and the responsibilities of those who house them. This site contains information on modification funds, advocacy agencies, guidelines, disability rights in housing programs, accessible housing designs, model building codes, and a Q&A section. www.hud.gov/groups/disabilities/cfm National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). The purpose of NAHRO is to be the leading housing and community development advocate for the provision of adequate and affordable housing and strong, viable communities for all Americans, particularly those with low-and moderate-incomes, and to enhance the professional development and effectiveness of NAHRO’s members. National Fair Housing Advocate Online This site has a digest of current news stories and articles from U.S. newspapers and journals about issues on housing for people with disabilities and housing discrimination. National Home of Your Own Alliance (HOYO) In 1993, through a five-year cooperative agreement with the Institute on Disability (IOD), the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) created a technical assistance center, the National Home of Your Own Alliance (Alliance). The rationale for promoting homeownership was based on the belief that non-traditional income streams and federal, state, and local subsidies could be structured and blended to support homeownership for people historically excluded from the housing market. Since 1998, the IOD has continued to maintain the national clearinghouse through an updated website, a toll-free information and referral line, and by responding to requests for information and publications through electronic and on-electronic mail. National Housing Institute (NHI) The NHI is an organization that examines the issues causing the crisis in housing and community in America. NHI has performed original research on such topics as saving subsidized housing, homeless prevention, and creating jobs as a component of affordable housing construction. The Institute searches for innovative strategies, unique partnerships, and effective ways to organize low-income communities. Their findings are then published, journalistic style, in Shelterforce, a bi-monthly magazine. National Low Income Housing Coalition The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated solely to ending America’s affordable housing crisis. Their focus is on the housing circumstances of those with the most serious housing problems, the lowest income households. National Resource Center on Supportive Housing and Home Modification. The Center works closely with groups involved with supportive housing and home modification. A National Advisory Committee works to: (1) provide applied research, evaluation, and policy analysis that will develop a knowledge base for practical applications, (2) provide Internet courses, workshops, conferences, and exhibits, and (3) provide policy updates, reports, guidebooks, newsletters, and fact sheets that provide objective information. Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Technical Assistance Project The Technical Assistance Project is funded to provide assistance to the AT Act Grantees to assist them to reduce barriers and increase access to assistive technology devices and service for consumers with disabilities of all ages. This project also provides technical assistance in the areas related to universal design and making homes accessible. A resource guide on making homes accessible is available on their website. Technical Assistance Collaborative (TAC) TAC is a national organization that works to achieve positive outcomes on behalf of people with disabilities or other special needs by providing state of the art information, capacity building, and technical expertise to organizations and policymakers in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, human services, and affordable housing. Affordable Housing Online Affordable Housing Online is a brand new website dedicated to making the latest and most up-to-date affordable housing data available to the low-income community. It provides a nationwide directory of affordable housing rental units. In currently contains more than 2,000,000 apartments in all 50 states and every major city in the United States. The directory is constantly growing, so check back frequently. www.affordablehousingonline.com KnowledgePlex KnowledgePlex is a comprehensive interactive resource for the affordable housing and community development field. Share knowledge, build relationships, and shape the future of American communities. Designed for practitioners, scholars, and policy makers, this easy-to-use website offers: practical solutions and innovative ideas, timely news and authoritative information, and collaboration with other housing leaders. National Housing Conference (NHC) NHC has been a leading advocate and influential voice in affordable housing and community development since 1931. To assist individuals in obtaining information on a variety of housing related topics, NHC has created an affordable housing clearinghouse which includes a listing of NHC member websites organized by issues and by function. Also included are links to several government websites and other housing related websites.
