DEPARTMENT OF INTERDISCIPLINARY HUMAN STUDIES
Department of Interdisciplinary Human Studies (DIHS)
Faculty of HDC may have their appointments in DIHS. Our faculty are assigned to a Program and one or more projects at HDC to work toward achieving identified objectives. As is common in higher education, our faculty accomplishes teaching, scholarly, and service activities. Also, they contribute to “program development” and to building inter-agency and inter-personal relationships. By program development, we mean working effectively to recruit opportunities and funding related to the mission of HDC. At the same time, we must be “good players” with the many agencies and individuals with whom it is our privilege to collaborate to advance systems of supports and services.
In annual planning and personnel evaluation, HDC leadership must attend to the usual areas of performance (i.e., teaching, scholarly, and service), plus program development and collaborative efforts so each person contributes to the mission and successes of their co-workers, the Center, and our state.
Academic Activities of the Department
- In-service Training – faculty and staff accomplish personnel development in a wide range of topics related to valid and effective supports and services for individuals with special needs and those who support them. Training formats include brief informative sessions, intensive workshops, training conferences, and scheduled series of training events.
- Supervised Practice/Service Learning – university students may arrange for learning and skill-practice with HDC faculty. Our most extensive offering is for School Psychology interns (See LAS*PIC). We commonly have students of disciplines related to health, education, social and human services working and learning in various roles among HDC projects.
- Continuing Education – many instructional efforts of HDC provide CEU's, CME's, or other types of credit for successful participation.
- Course offerings – HDC faculty teach courses in the School of Allied Health Professions and in area universities as arranged.
- BS in HS track in the MHS Program – We have proposed a specialized track within the MHS program to teach principles of behavior science and applications of this science to models of services in health, education, social and human services.
