COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Laura Brackin, Program Director

GOAL

To develop, evaluate, and disseminate model practices that promote recognition and adoption in communities of behaviors essential for the community to support achievement of human development goals.

 

INTENDED IMPACT
  • Promote the concept of citizenship for all persons residing in a community by developing services and supports that improve full inclusion
  • Institute a systematic community development process that addresses a community’s behaviors and values
  • Promote community development as a mechanism to create change within defined communities and outward to larger communities
TOPICS/AREAS OF EXPERTISE
  • Development/implementation of protocols for community needs assessments, development, and evaluation
  • Training/technical assistance on community culture, values, and behaviors
  • Training technical assistance on asset accumulation, housing, post-secondary education, transportation, entrepreneurial, employment, and youth leadership
OVERVIEW OF SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACTIVITIES
  • Provide training workshops on community culture, values, behaviors, and community development
  • Provide training workshops on asset accumulation
  • Provide training workshops on community-level and interagency teaming
  • Conduct research on youth self-determination, leadership, and self-esteem
  • Conduct research and provide training workshops on affordable housing, transportation, and postsecondary education

DIRECTIONS FOR FUTURE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop/disseminate training materials (“Fact Sheets”) on community development, asset accumulation, and teaming
  • Conduct research on essential practices associated with community development
  • Demonstrate effective models of asset accumulation, affordable housing, postsecondary education, transportation, and youth transition
